The story is about a patchwork elephant named Elmer. He lives in a herd of gray elephants. Elmer is different from the others because of his bright colors and sense of humor. He enjoys making others laugh and bringing joy to his friends. He becomes tired of being different and tries to change himself by rubbing off his colors to be like all the other elephants. The other elephants no longer recognize him without his colors, and he does not feel like himself. Eventually, Elmer realizes it's okay to be different and that being unique makes him special.
